I'm a 31-year-old trans woman who started HRT at 27. Over nine years as a software developer - including five years as a principal architect and director of research and development - I've worked alongside incredible LGBTQ+ people in tech who showed me what's possible when we create spaces where we belong.
With trans rights under constant attack and the current administration actively working to erase our identities, I knew I couldn't just wait for someone else to build what we need. Tech literacy and digital safety aren't just useful skills - they're survival tools. And we need a place to learn them together.
PHX Beyond Binary is my answer to that need. A place where trans people can gather safely, support each other, and access the resources we need to protect ourselves and thrive - both online and off.
When I started exploring my gender identity and eventually came out as trans, I was already working in tech. I saw how many LGBTQ+ people gravitate toward tech spaces - we're drawn to communities where being different is often an asset, where problem-solving and creativity matter more than fitting traditional molds.
But Phoenix had nothing built specifically for trans people. No trans-centered tech space, no hackerspace where we could just exist without code-switching or explaining ourselves. I realized we needed a place where trans comfort and safety aren't an afterthought - they're the foundation.
PHX Beyond Binary exists because we deserve spaces that center us, resources that serve us, and community that truly gets it. Not just inclusion - actual belonging.
The community is active now.
